Just have a couple days to spend at Ft Myers Beach? We've got the fun already planned out for you...
If you only have a weekend to spend in Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach, it can be a tough decision on what to do. Not because there's a shortage of activities there, mind you, but because there's so much to do that it can be next to impossible to get in everything you and your family want to do.
So, here are our recommendations of what to do in Fort Myers if you only have a long weekend to enjoy the area.
Day 1
After breakfast head to the beach for a little relaxation. Depending on the time of the year, the afternoon sun can get blazingly hot, too hot to enjoy. But the mornings can be quite nice and the Gulf is always warm. Plus, there are fewer people at the beach.
Late morning, take a Waverunner out on the Gulf. Mid Island Water Sports rents them by the hour and half hour. The whole family (anyone 16 and up) can go along.
When you get hungry, you can dine not far from the beach. There are plenty of quaint little cafes and restaurants in Fort Myers Beach. Many are beachside and within walking distance.
In the afternoon, give your skin a break from the sun and head over to the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. They shared adjacent properties known as the Seminole Lodge and the Mangoes. There's plenty to see, including some of Thomas Edison's projects in the lodge's lab.
Then head over to the docks for a memorable sunset cruise on the Gulf. There are several charters to choose from, including Sunset Ride Charters, which guarantees you'll see at least one dolphin on your trip, or you get your money back.
Finally, it's time to enjoy the nightlife of Fort Myers Beach. If you want some adult time, there are plenty of places with live music, lively conversation and delicious beverages that you can linger over as you talk about all the memories you made. Times Square is the place to go for entertainment at night in Fort Myers Beach.
Day 2
Time to hit the beach again. This time, head over to Lovers Key State Park, four barrier islands where you can bike, hike, explore or simply soak up the sun. You can rent a canoe or kayak at the park, so just grab your sunscreen and towel and you're ready to go.
If the kids are with you, spend the afternoon exploring the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum, which has plenty to keep kids of all ages entertained, including you. Don't miss the hurricane simulator and see what it feels like to be caught in one of Florida's legendary storms. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is another good choice.
For those who are more adventurous, schedule an airboat tour through the Everglades and see one of the most beautiful and natural nature preserves in the United States. An experienced guide may even give you the chance to hold an alligator during your tour.
As dinnertime approaches, head back into Fort Myers and pick up your tickets to the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater. The theater's talented cast tackles some of Broadway's biggest hits, including My Fair Lady, The Full Monty, Annie and more. As you enjoy the show, dinner is served, including Chef Carved Pot Roast, Crusted Chicken Broadway Style and dreamy desserts. Dinner and a show is a great way to spend your last evening in beautiful Fort Myers.
If trying your hand at the gaming tables is more your speed, head out to sea aboard the 162-foot Big M Casino yacht and try to beat the house at the tables. The ship also has free shows and entertainment aboard ship and a buffet. If you're lucky, you could win enough to cover your whole weekend in Fort Myers.
Finally, it's time to head home. But if you're an early riser, you can charter one last adventure and try to catch the big one out in the Gulf or pack up the car and take in a quick 18-holes at one of the area's many golf and mini-golf courses that are as beautiful as they are challenging.
One thing's for sure in Fort Myers. No matter what you choose to do, there is always fun in the sun in Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach. And you'll definitely want to come back again and again to fit it all in.
